Family Tragedy and Advocacy

On October 22, 1989, Jacob, then 11, was abducted at gunpoint while biking home from a convenience store in St. Joseph, Minnesota. The case remained unsolved for nearly three decades until Danny Heinrich confessed in 2016, leading authorities to Jacob’s remains

. Following this tragedy, Jerry and Patty transformed their grief into advocacy. They co-founded the Jacob Wetterling Foundation in 1989, focusing on child-safety education and abduction prevention

Patty Wetterling’s Public Work

Patty became a leading voice in child protection, contributing to the passage of the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act in 1994, which laid the groundwork for modern sex-offender registries.
