Eugene Victor Debs was an American socialist activist, labor leader, and five-time Socialist Party presidential candidate. Starting as a locomotive fireman, he rose to prominence as founder of the American Railway Union and leader of the 1894 Pullman Strike, which led to his imprisonment and conversion to socialism. A co-founder of the Industrial Workers of the World, Debs championed women’s suffrage, workers’ rights, and social welfare reforms. His 1920 campaign from prison won nearly a million votes, cementing his legacy as one of America’s most influential labor figures.
