María Corina Machado is a Venezuelan politician, activist, and opposition leader known for her staunch resistance to the regimes of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. An industrial engineer and cofounder of the electoral watchdog Súmate, she served in the National Assembly from 2011 to 2014 before being expelled. Leader of Vente Venezuela, she was barred from the 2024 presidential race despite winning the opposition primary, endorsing Edmundo González instead. Internationally recognized as Venezuela's "Iron Lady," she received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for democratic rights, alongside the Václav Havel and Sakharov Prizes. Her career has included organizing mass protests, enduring exile and clandestine escapes, and advocating free-market reforms including oil industry privatization.
