Scottie Scheffler was briefly jailed due to a misunderstanding at a traffic stop following a fatal accident near the PGA
On the morning of May 17, 2024, a fatal pedestrian accident occurred near the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, causing police to block off the area and direct traffic
. Scheffler, unaware of the road closure, attempted to drive a player-courtesy vehicle toward the course around 6:15 a.m. to reach his tee time
. In the process, he inadvertently accelerated past an officer, who was slightly injured when dragged to the ground
Scheffler was arrested and taken to a Louisville holding cell, where he was booked around 7:30 a.m. He faced four charges:
Second-degree assault of a police officer (for the officer being dragged)
Third-degree criminal mischief
Disregarding traffic directions from officers
Scheffler maintained that his actions were unintentional and described the situation as a “misunderstanding” while trying to comply with what he believed were instructions
Jail Experience and Release
Scheffler spent a short time in a holding cell, where he even went through part of his pre-round warm-up routine while watching himself on TV
. He was released on his own recognizance at 8:40 a.m., driven back to the golf course, and arrived to a cheering crowd before teeing off for the second round
All criminal charges against Scheffler, including the felony assault charge, were dropped on May 29, 2024, after the Jefferson County Attorney filed for dismissal and the judge approved it
. Scheffler’s brief incarceration was therefore resolved without any conviction or lasting legal consequences.
